Defensive Unit Game Review

What a way to end a season.  Nice job guys!  The defensive unit played really well.  They had 52 total plays!  That is about the amount High School and sometimes college teams see in a game.  Not one of them ever acted tired or took plays off.  One of the  things we worked on in practice this week was Defensive Pursuit Drills.  This emphasizes the importance of gang tackling and all defensive players getting to the ball, regardless of whether they are in on the tackle or not.  It showed in the game.  Several times, all 11 players were on top of the ball carrier at the end of the play.  Couldn't ask for more.

All defensive players took snaps during this game.  Since it was the last game, there was a slight bias towards the older 5th grade players, but the younger 4th graders were all able to play several times.  We did not have any defensive players miss practice this week, so we didn't have anyone sitting out the first series.

We saw a slightly higher rate of passing this game.  Of the 52 plays, 80.8% (42) were run plays and 19.2% (10) were pass plays.  The defense held the Rocky Mountain offense to an average of 2.9 yards per run and 3.1 yards per pass.  Similar to our previous game, 2 plays amounted for 43.4% of the total yards against us (66 yards).

What was most impressive, when it came time to make big plays, they got it done.  It's natural to point out the performance of individual players in a game like this, but as you'll see, everyone contributed.  This game was entirely a team effort and they played together as a team, each doing there respective jobs.

Thank you to the players and parents.  We really enjoyed this season and are hoping that we see each one of you next year!
